60-V Class High-Current Operational Amplifier

A high-current analog amplifier design with a 200 mA continuous-output target, unity-gain stability and thermal-status monitoring.

Design targets

Supply class
60 V total; reference range ±4 to ±30 V with symmetric supplies, subject to operating margin
Continuous output-current target
±200 mA; package, cooling and safe-operating-area dependent
Small-signal gain-bandwidth target
3 MHz, based on reference typical conditions
Slew-rate target
15 V/µs at unity gain, based on reference typical conditions
Protection and monitoring
Current limiting, thermal shutdown and a current-output thermal-status flag
Pin compatibility
Pin-assignment compatibility objective; package variant and pinout to be selected

Practical operating notes

  • Design is complete and pre-silicon. These are design targets, not measured results. The bandwidth and slew-rate targets use reference typical values at ±30 V, a 25 °C junction temperature and a 3 kΩ load to ground; the slew-rate condition uses unity gain. These figures do not guarantee full-swing operation at every load.
  • The 60 V total-supply figure is also the absolute maximum in the adopted reference. Allow margin for supply tolerance and transients when choosing an operating point. It does not establish safe operation from every nominal 60 V rail.
  • The 200 mA continuous target depends on the package, heatsinking, voltage across the output stage and safe operating area. Output swing and input common-mode range require voltage headroom. Do not assume maximum current is available across the full supply, output and temperature ranges.
  • Current limiting and thermal shutdown are protection objectives. Repeated thermal shutdown is not an intended operating mode. The thermal-status flag is a current output and requires a suitable external interface.
  • Package choice remains open. Reference package variants have different pin assignments and thermal connections. The selected pinout, mechanical fit, thermal behavior and electrical operation require validation before board-level interchangeability can be established.
  • Capacitive-load stability, inductive-energy return paths and transient protection must be evaluated for the application.

Possible applications

  • Transducer excitation within thermal and load limits
  • Servo control signal drive
  • Test and measurement equipment
