Design example
80-V Class 5-A Power Operational Amplifier
A power operational amplifier design targeting 5 A continuous output, with a programmable current limit for demanding analog loads.
Design targets
- Supply class
- 80 V total; reference operating range 10–80 V, with operating margin required
- Continuous output-current target
- 5 A; package, cooling and safe-operating-area dependent
- Peak output-current target
- 10 A class; transient operation within the safe operating area
- Small-signal gain-bandwidth target
- 1.6 MHz, based on reference typical conditions
- Slew-rate target
- 10 V/µs, based on reference typical conditions
- Current-limit control
- An external resistor sets positive and negative current limits
Practical operating notes
- These specifications are reference-based design targets. The 1.6 MHz bandwidth and 10 V/µs slew-rate targets use typical reference values at ±35 V supplies and a 25 °C case temperature; they do not establish full-swing bandwidth.
- 80 V is the total supply span, not output amplitude. It is also the absolute maximum in the reference, so allow margin for rail tolerance and transients. Output swing and input common-mode range require headroom.
- The 5 A continuous and 10 A peak targets depend on voltage across the output stage, temperature, cooling and pulse duration. Maximum supply and maximum current are not an unconditional simultaneous operating point.
- Current-limit resistor value, power rating and layout must be selected for the intended load. Current limiting does not replace safe-operating-area or thermal design.
- Check capacitive-load stability, inductive-energy return paths, supply protection and heatsinking for the application. Package and pin assignments require separate verification before board-level interchangeability can be established.
Possible applications
- Motor-drive and servo amplifier circuits
- Synchro excitation
- Programmable power-supply circuits
